Improving the Energy Performance of Healthcare Buildings
Healthcare and community health buildings need to remain safe, comfortable and operational while energy efficiency improvements are carried out. Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust Building Fabric Upgrades
Aran was appointed as a subcontractor to E.S. Moss Limited as part of a building fabric upgrade programme for Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust.
The project covered five healthcare sites across Hertfordshire:
- Danesbury Neurological Centre
- Bedford Health Centre
- Nevells Road Health Centre
- Cheshunt Community Hospital
- Park Drive Health Centre
The initial scope included cavity wall inspections across all five sites, alongside loft inspections at Danesbury Neurological Centre and Cheshunt Community Hospital. Full condition reports were produced following the cavity wall and loft inspections to help determine where improvements were required.
Survey-Led Recommendations
A key part of Aran's approach is ensuring that proposed works are appropriate for the individual building rather than installing measures unnecessarily.
During the loft survey at Cheshunt Community Hospital, our assessment found that the existing insulation was already sufficient. Further work would have provided limited additional benefit compared with the associated cost, so no additional loft insulation was recommended.
At Danesbury Neurological Centre, however, the survey identified a significantly greater requirement than originally anticipated.
Across five loft areas, Aran completed a full relay and tidy of 772m² of existing insulation, topped up insulation levels to 300mm throughout and removed the existing loft walkways before installing 56 linear metres of new raised walkways.
This ensured the existing insulation could perform effectively while maintaining safe access through the loft spaces.
Cavity Wall Insulation and Remedial Works
Following cavity wall condition surveys across all five healthcare buildings, Bedford Health Centre and Danesbury Neurological Centre were identified as requiring cavity wall insulation and associated preparation works.
At Bedford Health Centre, Aran completed:
- 60 linear metres of rubble removal and cavity cleaning
- 44 linear metres of DPC excavation
- 17.5 linear metres of repointing to facing brickwork
- 350m² of Thermabead Carbon Saver cavity wall insulation
The cavity wall insulation installation is supported by a commercial IAA 25-year guarantee.
Further works are currently being planned at Danesbury Neurological Centre, including 127 linear metres of rubble removal and cavity cleaning, 164 linear metres of DPC excavation and 873m² of Thermabead Carbon Saver cavity wall insulation, also supported by a commercial IAA 25-year guarantee.
