Improving Energy Efficiency in Student Accommodation
Aran was appointed directly by Darwin College, University of Cambridge, to undertake insulation improvements to a block of student accommodation as part of works to enhance the energy efficiency of the building.
The project focused on improving the existing loft insulation, ensuring it was correctly positioned and increasing insulation levels where required. These improvements were designed to enhance the thermal performance of the building fabric, reduce unnecessary heat loss and support the long-term energy efficiency of the student accommodation.
By upgrading the existing insulation rather than replacing it unnecessarily, Aran was able to deliver a practical and considered approach tailored to the requirements of the building. This allowed the existing insulation to be retained and improved, with additional material installed only where required. The works demonstrate how targeted building fabric improvements can form part of a practical approach to improving energy performance across university estates.
Supporting Energy Efficiency Across University Estates
As part of the works, Aran carried out 18m² of remedial work to tidy and correctly position the existing 200mm insulation. A further 90m² of loft insulation was topped up by an additional 200mm, bringing the total insulation depth to 400mm. By improving and building upon the insulation already in place, the project provided a practical approach to upgrading the building fabric while making effective use of the existing insulation.
