Supporting Public Sector Decarbonisation


Public sector organisations have an important role to play in helping the UK achieve net zero by 2050. With around 300,000 public buildings accounting for an estimated 3% of the UK’s carbon emissions, improving the energy efficiency of these properties is a significant part of the challenge. For many buildings, this will require comprehensive retrofit programmes that demand additional expertise, specialist skills and delivery capacity.

Aran is an experienced retrofit installer, providing insulation, fabric improvements, ventilation and renewable energy solutions. We work alongside public sector decarbonisation teams, helping them deliver practical energy efficiency improvements at scale.

Our approach helps create warmer, more energy-efficient buildings while supporting longer-term carbon reduction goals.

Improving energy efficiency in a valued community building

Aran supported the refurbishment of Shepreth Village Hall, helping improve the thermal performance and energy efficiency of this much-loved community facility. The project formed part of a wider energy retrofit designed to reduce energy consumption, running costs and carbon emissions while creating a more comfortable environment for users.

Working as a subcontractor to Strata Insulated Renders Ltd, Aran carried out condition surveys of the loft and cavity wall areas before installing:

  • 92m² of Thermabead Carbon Saver cavity wall insulation
  • 90m² of suspended ceiling insulation, using 200mm encapsulated insulation in fire-retardant bags
  • 34m² of loft insulation, using 300mm rolled insulation

Practical Retrofit for Community Buildings


The completed works form part of a wider programme to make the 1909-built village hall a more energy-efficient and comfortable space, while demonstrating how older community buildings can benefit from carefully considered retrofit measures.

By improving insulation across the building’s walls, suspended ceilings and loft space, the project helps reduce heat loss and improve thermal performance, supporting a more comfortable environment for the hall’s users throughout the year. It also highlights how targeted fabric improvements can play an important role in extending the life and improving the efficiency of older community buildings, without compromising their role as valued local spaces.
