Reducing Energy Costs Through Home Retrofit
Like many homeowners, Brigitte was experiencing ongoing issues with heating performance and rising energy costs within her home.
Brigitte’s home was previously heated using an electric heating system that was both costly to run and ineffective at maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. Despite paying higher daily energy costs, the property often remained cold, particularly during colder periods.
Like many residents, Brigitte was initially cautious about heating and solar PV offers, having experienced frequent unsolicited door‑to‑door approaches. This created understandable concerns around trust and legitimacy, making it difficult to know where to seek reliable support.
Our Approach and Delivery
Following advice from a neighbour, Brigitte chose to apply directly through a council‑supported programme rather than engaging with private sales approaches. Although initially placed on a waiting list and unsure whether the application would progress, the project was approved and moved forward.
A full survey of the property was carried out to assess suitability and to explain the proposed works in advance. The existing electric heating system was removed and replaced with an air source heat pump, alongside the installation of solar panels and a new control system to enable more effective temperature management.
On the first day, multiple installers attended the property as planned and took care to minimise disruption throughout the works. Protective coverings were used throughout the home, and the installation was completed smoothly, with guidance provided on how to operate and control the new system, including the use of a thermostat and energy monitoring via an app.
The Outcome and Resident Experience
Since the retrofit, the performance of the home has improved significantly. The property now remains warm throughout the day and night, with consistent indoor temperatures and continuous hot water availability. Bridget monitors energy usage daily and has seen savings of approximately £2 to £3 per day; previously, energy costs were higher despite Brigitte's home remaining cold.
What began as a cautious enquiry has resulted in a meaningful improvement to both comfort and energy efficiency. The upgrade has provided greater confidence in managing household energy use, supported by simple and accessible controls. Overall, the works have delivered a more comfortable, efficient home with clear, measurable benefits for the residents.
